Sleeping in the trees

Last week I got to fulfil a childhood dream and this time it didn’t involve my mother shouting “Joanna Mary Louise get down now!” from the ground.
I stayed in a treehouse. But not just any treehouse. This castle in the leaves was a mirrorcube and was surrounded by what looked like a red LEGO house, a UFO, a giant bird’s nest, a posh portacabin and a tree sauna.
Over Easter, the boyfriend and I stayed at the Treehotel in northern Sweden, in a little village called Harads to be precise. The site was only developed last summer by Kent and Britta who invited a range of top Swedish architects and designers to come up with some designs for their Treehotel vision. Not only visually astounding, they aimed to develop a truly eco-friendly resort that not only let you live in nature but in harmony with it too.
As soon as I spotted the hotel in a flash sale on Jetsetter, my mind was made up… I HAD to stay in the Treehotel and the Mirrorcube had my name all over it. So return flights to Stockholm and then onto Lulea were secured within another half an hour… only to find out that a return cab from Lulea to Harads (about 100 km) was £280!

A quick call to my Amex concierge and we had a hire car sorted for a quarter of that… although the amount we spent on petrol exploring the local area soon notched it up. The drive itself from Lulea was beautiful and gave us a taste of what was to come. Snow covered fields and ice covered lakes popped up to our left and right the entire journey not to mention the plains of fir trees.
